WARNING!

Banking online is a wonderful thing HOWEVER be aware of the following!

I've encountered a virus this week that only attacks financial institution log in web pages! The two that were affected on my clients machine were Bank of America and Chase but further research has indicted that it could be ANY of that type of website.

Malwarebytes took it out after updating the program! This tells me that the virus is relatively new.

If the web page you use to sign into a bank or financial institution changes BEFORE you put in any information PLEASE call the company and make sure that it's valid! They usually will know if there is a virus causing it or if their webmasters need the information.

If you have this virus PLEASE run Malwarebytes.

Victims have lost more than $150 million falling for rogue anti-virus schemes, the FBI says in a new warning.

For the first time, the FBI has issued a public warning about the threat of rogue anti-virus software, which the agency said has resulted in more than $150 million in losses to victims.

In an intelligence note posted Friday on the website of the Internet Crime Complaint Center, the FBI said users should be on the lookout for pop-up advertisements masking as legitimate-looking Antivirus software, known as "rogueware" or "scareware.

"Rogue anti-virus software typically is purveyed through malicious advertisements, or "malvertisements," on trusted websites.

When viewed or clicked, the ads lead users to sites that claim their computer is infected and, to resolve the issue, they should buy an anti-virus product, which turns out to be fake. In other instances, the ads try to install trojans onto the victim's PC. Criminals also have orchestrated the attack by "poisoning" search results, so that when a user searches for a popular term, he or she is led to a website site hosting the bogus software.

"The scareware is intimidating to most users and extremely aggressive in its attempt to lure the user into purchasing the rogue software that will allegedly remove the viruses from their computer," the FBI alert said. "Once the pop-up appears, it cannot be easily closed.

The FBI said should always research the names of security software applications to ensure their legitimacy. A recently released report from the Anti-Phishing Working Group, which analyzed internet fraud trends for the first half of 2009, found that the number of rogue Antivirus programs from January to June surpassed the total for all of 2008.

In June, the final month of the study, there were 152,197 new strains.

“The primary reason for the creation of so many variants is to avoid detection by legitimate anti-virus programs. The use of behavioral analysis is of limited use in this type of malware because the programs themselves do not act maliciously on computers, other than displaying false information."

So what DO you do?

The MOST important thing is DO NOT PANIC! Panic will cause problems not solve them.

DO NOT CLICK ON ANYTHING until you’ve thought it through.

More than likely you will be  viewing a web pages in your BROWSER software when this happens. (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox etc.)

IMMEDIATELY CLOSE THE BROWSER with the X in the far, upper right corner. DO NOT CLICK ANYWHERE ON THE PAGE OR YOU MAY TURN OFF YOUR PROTECTION & INSTALL THE VIRUS WITH YOUR BLESSING!

You may need to PRESS & HOLD  CTRL + ALT then tap DELETE to bring up the task manager to END TASK or REBOOT the pc to sever the tie to the infected website.

THEN, run a FULL scan with your antivirus program manually right away.

When you go back online DO NOT LOAD PREVIOUS SESSION if asked. Click on GO TO HOME PAGE or you’ll go back to the infected site and get the virus again!
